Review: According to their website, Drak.net purchases solar RECs (renewable energy credits) equivalent to the energy utilized to power their servers.

We like Drak.net as a company- we appreciate their having offered free hosting to non-profits and grassroots organizations. We think it’s fantastic that they donate to Kiva. We also think it’s great that they offer green hosting. But their green hosting program could use some improvement.

Concerns: As of the last survey, Drak.net’s program was lacking transparency, lacking certification of their credits and lacking verification of their claims. As of our last survey, the certificate on their website from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation dates back to late 2007, and omits any specific information about the amount of RECs purchased.

Our ratings are based on: extent of carbon neutrality, transparency of the greening program, certification of their credits, verification of their environmental claims and permanency of their emissions reductions.

The IT sector is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing to host your website with a green host, you can reduce your climate impact while supporting progressive companies!
