Review: According to AcornHost.com, they have purchased Green-e certified RECs from 3Degrees equivalent to 100% of their server and office electricity usage. They recycle, use recycled paper, and use electronic invoices rather than paper ones to reduce the amount of paper produced in the first place. Additionally, much of our company business is conducted online (telecommuting), saving gas.

We like AcornHost- they have a demonstrated commitment to being a good global citizen, and we apprciate that they offer reduced hosting rates to non-profits.

Unfortunately, their program is lacking significant transparency. It appears they made their REC purchase from 3degrees, but it is curious that they do not display a purchase certificate on their website. Presumably the RECs are green-e certified (last we checked, all of 3degrees' RECs are green-e certified), but it is unclear when or how many RECs were purchased.

Our ratings are based on: extent of carbon neutrality, transparency of the greening program, certification of their credits, verification of their environmental claims and permanency of their emissions reductions.

The IT sector is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing to host your website with a green host, you can reduce your climate impact while supporting progressive companies!
